Highway Hypnosis

When I was younger, I never had any issue falling asleep in the car. Long road trips, short trips to the store, everything in between. I found myself able to doze off within minutes, but had the uncanny ability to wake up as soon as we got home. The familiar turns the car made, the amount of times we stopped at intersections, and the final bump of the driveway. My body recognized these sensations and would wake me

Now,

I feel I’ve been driving for so long I forget how I even got here

I’ve changed lanes so often,

Missed so many exits,

Paid toll after toll,

Lost my map and refuse to ask for directions.

I can tell I’m running low on gas

And I don’t know how much longer I can live off of Rest Stop Cinnabons.

But every road ends eventually, right?

What I wouldn’t give to feel the inertia of some turns, the yielding at a sign

And to feel a final bump, knowing that I just made it

Home.
