Penumbra

I had hoped the shadows

Would shroud

My shame,

But the stars that reflected off my cheeks

Gave me away.

And I feared you’d see me

As the abhorrent beast I was.

Instead,

You just held me.

Eyes like street lights

Unblinking,

Comforting me with a watchful gaze,

Warm words whispered in the wind.

And it was the most human I ever felt

Because it was the most human I ever was.
