I always hated this saying.

To set someone, something, anything free

Implies a release from some obligation, control, or restriction.

No one is in possession of a relationship.

The relationship should possess you

Fill you with the spirits of love and empathy

And make your days blend with the weeks blend with the months blend with the years

Until you hit eternity. Until you hit infinity.

So no, I don’t think you need to set anything free

Because when you truly love someone

It is the most free you will ever feel
