Run Aground

You came into my life
Like the coast comes into view
After years lost at sea

Not with a flare,
Not with rescue,
But with sweet relief

And I drifted to shore
Carefully
For I’ve learned all to well
The dangers of a mirage

But you were real

You were warm sand
Under feet that had only known
Cold metal,
A hard emptiness that spent so long
Pretending to be strength

You never saw me as a wreckage

Just as someone making their way
Back to land

And so I learned to lie back
And let the tide touch me
Without fear of drowning

Because I know, my Love,
That if I wash away tomorrow

You will still be here,
Open arms of sand and sky,
Calling me home
