The human heart is frail
A weak and delicate bird placed it in a calcium cage for it’s own protection by millennia of evolution
One free to sing it’s languid lullabies of love, but to never see it for itself
And still, we give too much credit to the heart
We romanticize it and build it up to be this grandiose Goliath of all that is important
We say things like “heart of gold” and “follow your heart” and “home is where the heart is”
But a heart is nothing more than another organ
An assembly of tissue joined together into a structural form to serve a common function.
That is all the heart is.
What we should be revering, what we should be celebrating, is the spirit.
The will to stay strong, even when everyone else expects you to be weak
The drive and determination to push.
Push forward through disorder
Push back against destiny
Push just enough to stand your ground.
The heart may sing, but it’s the spirit that keeps the beat.
