Intertwined Beneath the Soil

I wandered through thorns that looked like promises,
And passed moss-covered stones that looked inviting to a weary head.

I mistook shadows for someone waiting
I mistook silence for peace

But then I started to hear the wind differently.

Not pushing,
Not pulling,
But calling

A warmth from above the canopy
Where the Sun should have been
But was hidden behind years of neglected overgrowth.

You found me on this path and didn’t ask me to change,
But offered to walk along

And now the forest is still a forest,
Wild and uncertain,
But I find beauty in the tangled truths

Your hand in mine
Makes the shadows less heavy,
Makes the air less cold.
And even when the trail disappears,
I am not afraid

Because love is not about getting out of the forest.

Love is about choosing to stay
And plant your roots
Intertwined beneath the soil

And learning to grow
Despite the dirt
